Thakkol Review

Thakkol, as the name suggests, is to travel behind the Thakkol without saying a word behind the Thakkol. Writer and director Kiran Prabhakaran, who is leaving the theater, understands that the key is not just opening the box, but also understanding some people. The film stars Indrajith and Murali Gopi as the central characters and exposes the mystery of the human mind through Christian priests. Those who seem to be cruel in the first place may never be so. This is underscored by the closing words of the film, “Cruel deeds that do good.”

The film is about Monsignor Mankunnath Pailey and Ambrose Vaz, the boy he brings with him as an altar boy. Ambrose, as an altar boy, was still with Monsignor Mankunnath Pailey. Monsignor, who kept Ambrose under his wing, never wanted to set Ambrose free. However, at the recommendation of Clement, who plays Ranji Panicker, the bishop appoints Ambrose as vicar of the parish church where he was born. His father’s decision to deliver to Ambrose was to escape Monsignor’s hand. However, Clement says he has a false eye for bringing Ambrose to the church and will reveal it upon his arrival. But when it came to the new church, things were not as Ambrose intended. There, waiting for Ambrose Sachsen was a key that was not down. The film is a journey behind it.

Monsignor Mankunnath Pailei plays Murali Gopi and Ambrose plays Indrajith. Both of these characters with a lot of inner sincerity are literally awesome. Each of the actors who entered the film were small but made their characters better. Renji Panicker’s Clement is a different character in his career. Ranji Panicker has been able to improve the character by giving a variety of voices as well as just the sidewalk. Nedumudi Venu, Inia, Roni, and Sudev Nair are the other characters in the film.

Thakkol Movie ReviewThere are some great songs in the movie. The music is composed by M Jayachandran. Jayachandran’s background music is what sustains the film’s mood. The main camera of Goa and Kottayam, the film was handled by Albie. The camera reaches out to the characters’ moods rather than visual beauty.

The two-and-a-half-hour-long film takes on a rhythmic rhythm rather than the intensity of the story. So length is often a villain. If the audience is confused about which direction the film is heading until the end of the first half, there is no mistaking it. Shaji Kailas, the director, and producer who brought the film to the forefront of this complex issue, deserves its share of the film as an entertainer. Shaji Kailas Jonar’s name in the role of the producer may be the Thakkol disappointment to the audience who come to the theater expecting a Shaji Kailas Joner film.

Big Brother Review

Director Siddique’s movies that have worked have always had an equal mix of humor, action, and sentiments. In his latest film, however, the director, who has also scripted the film has dropped the humor element in favour of more action and a patience-testing plot to pass off as a thriller. The movie’s protagonist 40-year-old Sachidanandan (Mohanlal) is just released from prison after serving a double life sentence for killing a police officer at a juvenile home. His family, however, welcomes him with open arms and within the first 30 minutes, he reveals to them that he wasn’t just serving time the past 24 years. To up the suspense quotient, Siddique has also given his protagonist a special skill that aids him in the film’s multiple action scenes that include two in the dark and one smack in the middle of a dustbowl.

Sachidanandan’s past, however, soon catches up to him and his family, and forcing him to return to the ways he didn’t want to. In the middle of all this is a police officer Vedantham IPS (Arbaaz Khan) who is on the hunt for an elusive drug boss Edwin Moses. How Sachidanandan’s, Vedantham’s and Moses’ paths cross is what the film is about, but Siddique opts to use so many tropes and misdirection techniques to get there that by the end of it, the audience could hardly care who Moses is and what his ultimate aim is. Mohanlal as Sachidanandan is dour-faced for most of the film, except for the comic scenes where he tries to observe the niceties after his life in prison. In fact, more of these scenes could have elevated the film. Arbaaz as Vedantham IPS has a powerful presence, but is underused. His parallel story seems to get lost in the mess that Sachidanandan and friends get entangled in, and the police officer becomes an apologetic footnote, at best.

The film’s leading ladies Mirnaa, Honey Rose and Gadha do their parts well in what limited scenes they have. Anoop Menon and Sarjano Khalid as Sachidanandan’s brothers Vishnu and Manu, respectively, perform decently. The comedy track from Vishnu Unnikrishnan, Tini Tom and Irshad fall flat, however. Deepak Dev’s songs in the film add a bit of energy that the film, which is 164 minutes long, desperately needed. If Siddique could have kept the run-time in check and maybe stopped short of building Sachidanandan as a superhero, the movie could have passed as a decent watch.

Pattas Review

Every once in a while, our Tamil filmmakers stumble upon a forgotten or dying ancient art form and come up with a film glorifying it and bringing it to public consciousness – even if for a brief while. With Pattas, Durai Senthilkumar wants to do for Adimurai, a less heard of the traditional martial art form from Tamil Nadu, what Indian did for Varmakalai and 7aum Arivu did for Bodhi Dharman. But the problem is he seems to have been carried away by the novelty of Adimurai and gives us a formulaic action drama that is predictable from start to finish. Forget plot structure and scenes, even the lines here hold no surprise.

The film begins in 2001 with a woman, Kanyakumari (Sneha, solid), being sent to prison for murder. The action then cuts to the present where Shakthi alias Pattas (Dhanush, earnest) is leading a happy-go-lucky life that involves some small-time thievery and playful retaliation against Sadhana (Mehreen Pirzada), the pompous neighborhood girl. The latter makes him steal from her workplace, a mixed martial arts academy run by Nilan (Naveen Chandra, ineffective). But little does he realize that he has a history with Nilan until he meets Kanyakumari, his long-last mother, who wants him to avenge the murder of his father, Thiraviyam (Dhanush, again) and bring glory to Adimurai, the ancient martial arts form that he practiced.

It is these portions featuring Thiraviyam that are the saving grace of Pattas. This flashback is filled with drama, but surprisingly, rather than flesh out this segment, detailing the tragic turn of the friendship between Thiraviyam and Nilan, and the latter’s strained relationship with his father, an Adimurai guru played by Nasser, Durai Senthilkumar’s writing is content with dealing in broad strokes that these scenes are only half as impactful emotionally as they should have been, and feel rushed. But there is an inherent rousing quality to them, amplified by Vivek-Marvin’s punchy score.

On the other hand, the director spends too much time on the Pattas-Sadhana track, which isn’t as funny as he wants it to be. There is no chemistry between the two leads, with Mehreen’s performance lifeless and Dhanush’s youthful antics coming across as juvenile. And even the portions that follow the film’s big revelation lack impact. Even the drama that we associate with the sports film genre is lacking in the MMA contest scenes, with Pattas made to take on lackluster opponents. After the strong show in Kodi, it is a surprise that Durai Senthilkumar has gone to his middling Kaaki Sattai form and given us this Pattas with no bang.

Chhapaak Box Office Collection Report, Review and Rating

Chhapaak is a Hindi film directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by her as well as Deepika Padukone in collaboration with Fox Star Studios. Based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal, it stars Padukone as an acid attack survivor, alongside Vikrant Massey.

The film was announced on 24 December 2018 by Padukone on her Twitter account; it marks her first production venture. Filming took place from March to June 2019 in New Delhi and Mumbai. Days before the film’s release, Padukone visited students who were brutalized during the 2020 JNU Attack, which led to a divided response on Twitter. A few right-wing magazines later wrongly reported that the religion of the acid thrower in the film was changed from a Muslim into a Hindu character. The film was theatrically released on 10 January 2020. It received positive reviews from critics.

Chhapaak Movie Review

Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Chhapaak’ is inspired by the story of real-life acid attack survivor, Laxmi Agarwal, who has become a symbol of strength and inspiration for many women. The film is a fictionalized account with Deepika Padukone playing the central character Malti, who is attacked in broad daylight on the streets of Delhi by a friend of the family, Bashir Khan aka Babbu and his aide.

As the narrative chooses a non-linear route, we first meet Malti when she is on a job hunt – consciously trying to move on from the emotional scars that the heinous crime has left her with. For the physical scars, she has to go through a number of complicated surgeries. In fact, far from the dreams, she nursed of being a singer, her life is now an intersection of her work with an NGO for acid victims, her multiple surgeries and her court cases. Yet, the film steers away from melodrama or manipulation and instead gives us a powerful protagonist whose resolve to fight is punctuated with her determined smiles, the pain in her eyes and her indomitable spirit.

As support from her family dwindles owing to her brother’s illness and father’s death, it is Malti’s lawyer Archana (Madhurjeet Sarghi), who stands by her through her arduous journey. From Malti’s PIL to ban the sale of acid to amendments in the acid violence legislation, her team of women lawyers, take on the system. Her other main support comes from Amol (Vikrant Massey), who employs her to work for his NGO.

Deepika Padukone is the soul of the film, delivering a brilliant, immersive performance. In fact, there are many scenes where her act will move you to tears – like the one where she holds up an earring to her face but realizes now she can’t put it on. Or her piercing cry when she sees her face for the first time in a mirror after the attack. And one where she determinedly tells Amol, “Mujhe party Karni hain.” Precisely why Malti’s character is a winner because at no point does she succumb to self-pity. And as Deepika embraces her character completely, her transformation is enhanced through effective prosthetics. Devoid of even a hint of glamour, all we see is Malti throughout.

Both Vikrant Massey and Madhurjeet Sarghi pitch in very commendable performances. The story sends out a strong message and is undoubtedly a brave attempt, however, the edit seems choppy in places and certain parts of the narrative seem a tad stretched in the second half. The music tracks stand out – with ‘Chhapaak’ title track and ‘Nok Jhok’ (soundtrack by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, lyrics by Gulzar) adding to the poignancy of the mood. ‘Chhapaak’ is not a film that lets you go easy, just as one begins to settle in to think Malti has managed to get better of her perpetrator, it jolts you with a few grim.
