Kadaikutty Singam Movie Review
From the time Pandiraj’s Kadaikutty Singam went on floors, it was tipped as a family movie set against a village backdrop. Staying true to its genre and expectations, the story revolves around a large family, headed by Ranasingam (Sathyaraj). Though a father of five girls, he is a little upset about not having a son with his wife (Viji Chandrasekhar). He gets married to another lady (Bhanupriya), and hopes of fulfilling his wish of being a father to a baby boy even in his 50s.
One day, his wish does come true. His son, Gunasingam (Karthi), though not very educated, goes on to become a farmer as he grows up. Two girls from his own family (played by Priya Bhavani Shankar and Arthana) and their respective parents wish to get them married to Gunasingam. However, he falls in love with another girl (Sayyeshaa) against everyone’s expectations in the family. This leads to several disputes and misunderstanding among the family members, and eventually many of them start disliking Gunasingam.
On the other hand, a few in the town who always wanted to see Gunasingam’s downfall, utilize the situation. Will Gunasingam get married to his lady love?
The film is a watchable fare for those who love drama, which has ample emotional sequences built on family bonding. Having said that, there are moments where one feels the intensity of melodrama is a bit high, a little exaggerated.
Karthi steals the show as a proud farmer who is hopeful of the state of agriculture in the country. As a down-to-earth family man, who preaches about the greatness of farming and the need to embrace it, the role has given him another chance to showcase his acting prowess. Soori’s comedy comes as a relief at many places in the film which is a bit overloaded with family sentiments. The heroines are OK, while Sathyaraj, Ilavarasu, Bhanupriya and the other supporting artistes play their parts well. Imman’s music and Velraj’s cinematography enhance the storytelling of several situations, while editing could have been much better.
