Happy, a timid Sardar living in Patiala, finds his life turned upside down when he falls in love with Mary, a Malayali Knanaya Christian girl. He wins her heart and both sets of parents agree to the wedding. But there`s a catch: his folks want a Punjabi Shaadi and Mary`s father is adamant about having a Christian wedding. Can he pull this off, especially since his three co-brothers (a Hindu, a Muslim and a Communist) are out to wreck his plans?

Review: Cross-cultural romances are often ‘explosive’ affairs both on and off-screen in our country, thanks

to parents who stick to their guns, while youngsters are unconcerned about region and religion. But cultural differences in love stories are also fertile ground for comedy if executed well. Does Happy Sardar tap this well? Punjabi-Malayali boy Happy Singh (Kalidas) and Mary (Merin Philip), a Knanaya girl fall in love. But then comes the trickiest part – making their families fall in love. They set out to win over the parents, but as anyone can guess, it’s no cakewalk.

The film is light and frothy in parts. Kalidas has a decent screen presence as a young Mallu Sardar. New girl Merin looks cute in her different get-ups. There are a few good jokes by Sharafudheen’s character. It’s not always that one gets to see ceremonies of communities, such as the Knanayas, on the big screen and this film shows us quite a few such interesting aspects. The styling of the characters is good and song settings are nicely done. The movie might resonate with those who have had inter-state weddings. At times, there

are also some playful digs at each other’s cultures that are enjoyable. However, something that one needs strongly in a romantic tale is a strong chemistry between the lead pair, which is sadly absent here. The film seems to neither care much about establishing why the duo are so into each other, nor does it really bother to captivate the audience. At times, the couple’s journey is even stretched to the point of extreme Bollywood-square disbelief.

Certain in-your-face, impact-less evergreen dialogues and references are tough to ignore. The parental tiffs expected in the tale are too stretched-out and overdone in certain sequences. The movie gathers its emotional heft mostly in the second half, even going to the extent of showing how the cultural hatred

spread by the older generation corrupts young minds, but not with much effect. The second half of the film also often descends into a tiring melodrama that makes one squirm in the seat, waiting for the ending. The songs only serve to slacken the pace of the screenplay which is predictable to the extent of being seriously boring. Happy Sardar might impress those who care the best about a colorful narration, even in the absence of a story with a strong spine.

Chola Movie Review

Chola is a Malayalam-language drama film directed by Sanal Kumar Sasidharan and produced by Joju George, and cop-produced by Shaji Mathew and Aruna Mathew. The film stars Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan and Akhil Viswanath.

Chola Movie Review

Be prepared for an immersive, literally head-spinning and almost interactive bit of film viewing. For this, the credit goes not just to director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan and the amazing cast, but in equal, if not more, measure to cinematographer Ajith Aacharya and composer Sergey Cheremisinov. Their combined efforts will fill you with anger, fear, hate and sometimes leave you almost feeling sick.

The story is like an on-the-ground portrayal of an abuse case, regularly reported in Kerala. The names of the characters are almost not important, though Nimisha Sajayan, a truant schoolgirl, is called Janu by her boyfriend. The youngsters decide to get out of their village in the high ranges for a day of fun in the city. Their ‘chaperone’ is Joju George, who is the boy’s ‘ashaan’. Janu is uncomfortable from the start to see him and things don’t take long to get out of hand.

And there is none of the ‘prettiness’ of commercial cinema here. There are moments when you are left flinching. There may be bits in the denouement that we don’t understand, but even that can be appreciated as the complications of emotions rising from life-changing situations. Nimisha is perfect as the raw, provincial schoolgirl. Her fear and helpless submission will get under your skin. Joju fills the screen with a menacing presence. Akhil Viswanath is excellent as the spineless boyfriend. These are characters we will love to hate for a long time. And we have to add once again about the jolts the cinematographer gives, while almost spinning us around to convey a horrible moment or putting us under the power of a waterfall. Sergey’s music is chillingly fitting for the scenes.

Chola Review

The criticism Sanal Kumar Sasidharan usually faces is that the pace of his films is slow. Here too, it is a small story that moves at a mellow pace – there are lingering glances, moody landscapes, few dialogues and symbolic imagery – but never once do you feel a lag; so immersed are you in the storytelling. It is a must-see for the lover of cinema, but be warned, it is not for the faint of heart.

Thakkol Movie Review and Rating

Thakkol, as the name suggests, is to travel behind the Thakkol without saying a word behind the Thakkol. Writer and director Kiran Prabhakaran, who is leaving the theater, understands that the key is not just opening the box, but also understanding some people. The film stars Indrajith and Murali Gopi as the central characters and exposes the mystery of the human mind through Christian priests. Those who seem to be cruel in the first place may never be so. This is underscored by the closing words of the film, “Cruel deeds that do good.”

Thakkol Movie

The film is about Monsignor Mankunnath Pailey and Ambrose Vaz, the boy he brings with him as an altar boy. Ambrose, as an altar boy, was still with Monsignor Mankunnath Pailey. Monsignor, who kept Ambrose under his wing, never wanted to set Ambrose free. However, at the recommendation of Clement, who plays Ranji Panicker, the bishop appoints Ambrose as vicar of the parish church where he was born. His father’s decision to deliver to Ambrose was to escape Monsignor’s hand. However, Clement says he has a false eye for bringing Ambrose to the church and will reveal it upon his arrival. But when it came to the new church, things were not as Ambrose intended. There, waiting for Ambrose Sachsen was a key that was not down. The film is a journey behind it.

Monsignor Mankunnath Pailei plays Murali Gopi and Ambrose plays Indrajith. Both of these characters with a lot of inner sincerity are literally awesome. Each of the actors who entered the film were small but made their characters better. Renji Panicker’s Clement is a different character in his career. Ranji Panicker has been able to improve the character by giving a variety of voices as well as just the sidewalk. Nedumudi Venu, Inia, Roni, and Sudev Nair are the other characters in the film.Thakkol Movie Review

Thakkol Movie ReviewThere are some great songs in the movie. The music is composed by M Jayachandran. Jayachandran’s background music is what sustains the film’s mood. The main camera of Goa and Kottayam, the film was handled by Albie. The camera reaches out to the characters’ moods rather than visual beauty.

The two-and-a-half-hour-long film takes on a rhythmic rhythm rather than the intensity of the story. So length is often a villain. If the audience is confused about which direction the film is heading until the end of the first half, there is no mistaking it. Shaji Kailas, the director, and producer who brought the film to the forefront of this complex issue, deserves its share of the film as an entertainer. Shaji Kailas Jonar’s name in the role of the producer may be the Thakkol disappointment to the audience who come to the theater expecting a Shaji Kailas Joner film.

The joke is on, Pagalpanti movie review

Pagalpanti movie review: John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Ileana D’cruz, Pulkit Samrat, Arshad Warsi, Kriti Kharbanda and Urvashi Rautela come together for a masterclass on how not to make a slapstick film. Pagalpanti Cast: John Abraham, Ileana D’Cruz, Pulkit Samrat, Kriti Kharbanda, Arshad Warsi, Anil Kapoor, Urvashi Rautela, Saurabh Shukla, Director: Anees Bazmee as the self-aware title says, Pagalpanti was never supposed to be taken seriously. It belonged, and proudly so, to that Bollywood coinage — mindless

comedy. A genre in itself, it is colloquially described as ‘leave your brains at home’ movies. Now these films, peddling slapstick, can be fun too. Director Anees Bazmee’s Welcome and Singh is Kinng being two such examples. They treaded lightly as they piled on silliness in droves. Big and loud, both the movies made broad comedy work once they found their rhythm. Alas, where Bazmee’s Welcome danced, his Pagalpanti stomps. It shows you early on that it has two left feet, and this is how it is going to be. With its obligatory big cast, bigger sets and a lavish budget – those stately homes in the UK don’t come cheap and Pagalpanti seems to be set exclusively in them – it ticks off some of the boxes too.

Where Pagalpati falters– oh, where do I start – is everything else. The jokes are scarcer than politically correct humor on The Kapil Sharma Show. In the names of runaway lines and silly gags, we are offered dialogues so lame that John Abraham’s character has to spell it out: “Ye zaroori nahi ki har cheez ka koi Matlab ho (It is not important that everything should mean something).” What Pagalpanti lacks in quality, it

pagal-panti-movie-review

attempts to fill in with sheer quantity. It throws everything it has at you. There are songs so unnecessary that they need exposition; three lions run amok in a scene and are so bored with what is happening that they seem to be pining for their cages; there is a ghost who likes to dance to recycled 90s songs in colorful negligees, and not one good joke in all of it put together! Here’s the plot of Pagalpanti, wafer-thin as it is – Down-on-his-luck Raj Kishore (John Abraham), his friends Chandu (Pulkit Samrat) and Junky (Arshad Warsi) leave disaster in their wake. Till their neck in debt, the trio is employed by bumbling dons Raja (Saurabh Shukla) and his brother-in-law WiFi (Anil Kapoor). The dons are being pursued by rival dons and after blowing up an appropriate number of CGI cars, they all meet a stand-in for diamantaire Niraj Modi (Inaamulhaq).

This man has fled India for the UK with thousands of crores and wants Raja and WiFi to double the money. Somewhere on the fringes are the three lead actresses too – Ileana D’Cruz as John’s girlfriend who has been defrauded by him, Kriti Kharbanda as Raja’s airheaded daughter who falls for Pulkit and Urvashi as

pagal-panti-movie-review

the ghost who isn’t and Arshad’s love interest. They have little to do beyond screeching and dancing with the three male leads. To be fair, they are not only ones saddled with the screechy parts. We are force-fed patriotism too as John’s avenging hero acts against Modi and his fugitive uncle (Mehul Choksi, anyone?). In a heavy-handed scene in a film that is full of those, John explains to Anil’s WiFi that he is indeed a patriot because he hates when India loses at cricket as Karma’s Aye Watan Tere Liye plays in the background. Pagalpanti appears to be a collection of improvised scenes rather than a film made from a real script. The performances are wooden, dialogues stilted and regressive, and the story – well, there isn’t one. This one is best avoided.
