2018 Movie Review

In 2018, Kerala faced one of the deadliest floods in history. The people who experienced the calamity firsthand and those who were affected by it are still recovering from the wounds of the tragedy. Many lost their lives, houses, and livelihoods. However, during the flood, everyone came together to uphold humanity, irrespective of their differences in caste, creed, or economic background. Jude Anthany Joseph, the director of the recently released film “2018,” has tried to capture the essence of this solidarity in his movie, and he has succeeded. The movie begins in a village called Aruvikkulam, where we are introduced to the inhabitants and how they go about their daily lives. The film follows the stories of several characters, such as Anoop (played by Tovino Thomas), a man who left the army by showing a fake medical certificate so he could go to Dubai to make ends meet. There’s also a fisherman’s family comprising Lal, Naran, and Asif. While Lal and Naran’s characters are proud fishermen, Asif Ali’s character wants to pursue acting. The movie also features a pregnant woman, the parents of a specially-abled child, a blind person, and several other characters.

The first half of the movie showcases the mundane lives of the characters in the village. However, slowly, we see the rains lashing the state, and the situation turns grim in just a matter of hours. As Kerala begins flooding, we get transported to their world and feel helpless. The movie captures the moments of anxiety as to what’s going to happen next, such as a pregnant lady being airlifted, Asif Ali’s character finding a snake during a rescue, or the fishermen stepping up to save trapped human beings.

While “2018” takes a melodramatic route in some places, it works for the most part. It is a technically sound film, and that’s what makes it an immersive experience. The film might feel a bit stretched towards the end, but it stands as a testament to the people of Kerala and those who extended a helping hand to the needy from different parts of the world. “2018” is a heartwarming film that evokes a range of emotions. It makes you feel for the characters, you feel trapped, you well up, and you also feel relieved when the characters are saved. If a film is able to make you feel so many emotions, then the director has succeeded in what he set out to do.

The performances in the movie are outstanding. Tovino Thomas stands out, but so do Lal and Asif Ali. Indrans, Naran, Kunchako Boban, Aparna Balamurali, and several other characters have also made an impact on the screen time they got. The cinematographer Akhil George, the editing by Chaman Chacko, and the VFX have made the audience understand the magnanimity of the disaster through their impeccable work.
