WHO Malayalam Movie Review

Review: Ajay Devaloka’s WHO has elements of a psychological thriller, a neo noir film, science fiction and a time travel movie. The story starts off by showing how John Luka’s (Shine Tom Chacko) mornings and nights are filled with dreams that take him to the same secluded area, where his bike conks off. As he makes his way through the stormy, sinister and dark surroundings, he is led by the light of the Christmas star, hung in front of an isolated house. However, as soon as he reaches the doorbell, he wakes up from sleep, almost panting. This keeps continuing for a few days, until someone actually opens the door and shouts back, “All these days, you came up to the door and returned, and now you are actually banging the door! What do you want?”

That moment is when the thin line between what is real and unreal starts to blur. Was it a dream or not? You start asking yourselves. From then on, starts the journey of reality and imagination, fate and dreams, life and death.

As the time swiftly travels back and forth, from 2040 to 2012, the dreams too sway through the minds of Dolores (Pearle Maaney) and Vinod Bharve (Rajeev Pillai). In their dreams, they see each other or are taken to the same world of mystery and eerie silence. A few of them consult Dr Samuel, essayed by Prasanth Nair, popularly known as Collector Bro, who is also left helpless at the hands of fate. When they are curious to know the truth, he keeps telling them, ‘You can find the truth, but you cannot handle it’.

Parallel to this universe is the he murder of Merin and the Isabella missing case, which is being investigated by Shahul Hameed and his assistant

Dolores’ imagination literally ventures into reality after she finds out from the newspaper that the kidnapped girl from her dream was actually murdered. Being drained out of all energy to live a life of comfort and mental peace, she seeks the help of a criminal psychologist Arunima, who is also a dream interpreter. Whether she will be relieved of all the chaos inside her head and whether the unfolded mysteries would be solved forms the rest of the story.

The fact that the film traverses into a completely different realm is in itself an unusual experience, and the way in which the director has chosen to treat it with deserves a mention. The dream of the unknown, the shared dreams and psychosis constantly keeps one thinking and asking, as to what happens to whom. That said, the poor dialogues make the actors falter intermittently. Being on-screen for the first time ever, it is refreshing to see Prasanth Nair don a completely different role. While Shine Tom Chacko, Rajeev Pillai and Pearle Maaney deliver what they are asked to by the director, it is the performance of Shruthy Menon, which rises above the rest. The child actor, who essayed the role of Juwana, also captures attention.

The film bears an uncanny resemblance to Christopher Nolan’s films, and one might wonder if Ajay Devaloka is his ardent fan. Being exposed to multiple genres of filmmaking, WHO also drifts towards not being able to culturally place the characters. Also, with an extensive theme as this, the entire film seems like a fine and layered cloth being stretched to such an extent that its basic texture or essence falls apart. It does seem like a true test of patience at times.

That said, WHO needs to be lauded for treading on a path, hitherto unexplored in Malayalam cinema.
